First, make sure you have the latest BIOS installed:

functional battery if necessary to upgrade the BIOS)
If the 480MB drive is not an IBM hard drive, there is a distinct possibility
that the problem relates to the MASTER/SLAVE setting on the drive. Prior to
1998, when the settings were standardized, IBM drive M/S settings were the exact
opposite of some other manufacturers.
Check the M/S settings between the new and old drives. More than likely you'll
have to look the settings up on the Internet as this info was rarely printed on
the drives that long ago. You might have to modify the connection between the HD
and the drive shell by either removing some pins from the drive or cutting a
portion of the drive connector in the shell.
