If your question is which network card and software to get for the PC,
I make a couple of suggestions:
1) Get a *NEW* name brand PCI network interface card. Don't save $5
and try getting one via e-bay.
2) You don't need any additional software for the PC. Windows 2000 has
all the networking software you'll need to share files, etc.
3) If you have an "always-on" connection to the Internet (such as DSL
or a cable modem) then make sure your network is always protected
by a firewall (hardware or software) and virus software.
If you don't have an always-on Internet connection and you don't intend
to expand your network beyond the Thinkpad and the one PC, then get ONE
"cross-over" Ethernet cable long enough to stretch between the two
systems. If you have more than the two system, an always-on Internet
connection or intend to go beyond the two systems in the next year or
so, then get one "non-crossover" cable PER SYSTEM and buy a small,
cheap "network hub" to act as a central point into which all systems
are plugged.
I'm sure others will also chime in with helpful information/suggestions.
