My first home computer was the KIM in 1976. A single circuit board with 8
7-segment LEDs for output and a hex keypad for input. It did have an
integrated audio port to allow storing programs on audio tapes via
modulation. It was a challenge to program. I built a Plexiglass box and
added a +5/-5/+12v power supply.
BTW, I still have the first 2 1/2 years of Byte Magazines. Not a single PC
ad in the first 3 volumes. An Altair kit ad was in the 4th. All the
articles were how to build I/O devices (such as modifying TV's to work as
monitors) for the available chips. I had fun.
