*** off topic -- Red Hat 7.1 xfree setup?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with this error message (before I give
up hope, I've got no other people to turn to) -
upon running startx I get
    execve failed for etc/X11/X (errno 2)
    giving up.
    xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
    xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I've tried running Xconfigurator but it quits after the probe with:
    Server doesn't exist, can't continue.
    tried to use ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA

I've tried logging in as root to setup (I hope that's the right
permissions) - do I need to chmod something? I noticed that when I 'ls' the
X11 directory the X file is flashing white on a red background. In
xf86config I've also tried changing the x server to the standard SVGA
driver.
