The failure rate on floppy drives for 760 and 755 models is extremely
high. There are three different FRU models out there that fit, and all
three have similar failures... They just stop working without any
apparent reason. You can use an external unit with more success if it
has a working floppy drive, but the actual floppy drive is the same in
both the internal and external unit. You can exchange the drives with
some success, but in general, the bad ones stay bad. Thinkpad floppy
drives that fit the 760, 755, and a few others which are becoming more
difficult to find in reliable working condition... about a third of
the ones on eBay don't work.

The 760 floppy drive has the highest failure rate of any component I
know of... higher than the infrared unit on the 760, the power supply
on some 500 series models, and the keyboards on many models.

If you can find an external unit with the correct cable connectors on
it, you will have much greater success in the rest of your install.
