What risk are you talking about? I would suppose you're walking
around worrying about the sky falling on you too? :)

I'm more worried about a rock flying in through the window and hitting
me on the head, knocking me unconscious, and my head falling down and
the soldering iron turning up and punching through my eye into my brain
while I'm doing these than having a battery blow up.

There is some risk in everything and it's wise to take general
precautions, but it also isn't rocket science to realize that the tiny
amount of heat transferred in a few seconds isn't enough to set one off,
they'd blow up if left in your car on a warm day if it was. For that
matter most of the heat that is there for the few seconds goes into
evaporating the liquid acid flux, there's only a second or two at the
end where you're actually heating the terminal and doing the soldering.
As I said I touch the joint within a second or so after I remove the
iron, to make sure I'm not putting to much heat into things. My finger
would be burning long before I was in any real danger of blowing up a
battery..
