OK, guys..

heres what I know..

IBM Storage treats IBM PC group like any other customer..
(this is why some/many thinkpads have hitachi drives)

a HDD that comes with a thinkpad has a one year warranty, like the battery..
i have not read the warranty conditions recently, so this might be out of
date info..
(AND i have not had them refuse to warrant a drive even beyond a year)

OEM drives are drives NOT sold to IBM PC group..
ALL of them..
other big customers are DELL and Apple..

an IBM OEM drive can have a 3 year warranty from IBM, or a three year
warranty from the vendor..
in any case, who cares as long as you get good customer service..

some OEM drives come from a distributor for IBM drives, they get that 3 year
warranty direct from IBM..

some OEM drives were first sold to DELL or Apple or others and given the
ice-cube like nature of the shelf life of ANY modern electronic gizmo, no
one wants to have 1000 32gig HDD's on hand when IBM introduces a 49gig
drive..
so, sometimes they sell some drives out the back door..
IBM storage systems will only honor a warranty claim from the original
purchaser (i.e. DELL or Apple) in these cases, and by THAT time DELL and
Apple won't talk to you..
(remember, i said "back door")
this does not mean these drives were "liberated". it only means (in most
cases) that DELL and Apple, et al., just don't want warranty issues with
these parts..

AND, Kevin, IRT your 32gig drive, 90 days is way better than buying one on
ebay and getting a dead drive from a seller who does'nt give a rats ass if
it works or not..
(bear in mind, some sell their junk on ebay and others are plain and simple,
crooks!. and, i must add, many more are good decent sellers)

Happy Holidays, guys 'n gals..

Cordially, :-)
