Hi!

After owning a ThinkPad A21p (2629-HWU) for a year now, I decided to
subscribe to this list. I am generally quite happy with it, although
it did catch fire when I first got it, but that's a different
story. Recently, the internal disk (IBM Travelstar 32GB) started to
make some rather unhealthy noises and I also experienced a hard error
crash of Win2k most likely due to the disk problems. I called IBM to
RMA the disk and order the UltraBay 2000 HDD Adapter. Both packages
arrived amazingly quickly and I then proceeded to swap out and copy
the drive (lots of problems with that too; also a different story).

I now have the new 32GB drive in my ThinkPad and it started to make a
very annoying albeit intermittent knocking sound. I suspect thermal
recalibration, which would be in line with what other people have
reported here before and also would make sense since the machine does
get very hot. Here's what I am wondering about:

1) Does anybody have access to a low-level tool (not IBM's DFT) that
lets me read out operational statistics from the drive? If it is in
fact recalibrating, it is probably keeping stats on it.

2) Has anybody recently gotten a 32GB Travelstar? What's the model
number (not Assembly or FRU part number)? The replacement disk I
received has the same model number as the 48GB unit, which does run
faster and presumably does get hotter.

Thanks!

Alex.
