Bill,

Thanks for the quick response. Comments below.

Well, I am looking at the original and the RMA drive right now and
here's what each says:

IBM Travelstar 32.0GB Model DJSA-232
IBM Travelstar 32.0GB Model IC25T048ATDA05-0

I too was under the impression that ...048... meant 48GB, but
apparently this isn't true. Both drives have a sticker separate from
the label, which indicates the ASM P/N and the FRU P/N. The FRU for
both drives (and the ASM for the DJSA-232) is 08K9509. The ASM for the
"48 drive" is different (27L4228) and both drives have completely
different numbers on the main label (visible on the DJSA-232 is a P/N
of 07N4148 and a FRU of 07N6018). The geometry indicated on both
drives is identical and the only other difference seems to be that the
new drive pulls 1A @ 5VDC while the old one was happy with 500mA.

A quick look at the IBM Storage Web site shows that both models indeed
have essentially the same rotational speed of about 5400 rpm. I was
looking at the 30GB version of the third generation Travelstar, which
runs at 4200 rpm. What's odd is that the drive configuration listed on
the spec sheet for the "48 drive" does not match what is printed on
the label of mine, unless the label information is purely for
configuration purposes and represents a logical geometry. This drive
is somewhat mysterious, I have to admit.

On the monitoring software side, I found IBM's SMART Defender tool on
their HDD Support site. I am about to install it to see if it can help
me with the noise. Does anybody have any experience with this tool?

Thanks.

Alex.
