The TI Cardbus hardware controllers on these machines are unreasonably
finicky. Here are a couple of
tips:
(1) In Windows 98 you should not repeat not be running Cardworks for Windows
or any other PC Card drivers.
Unlike W95, W98 has its own built-in cardbus support, and anythingelse will
interfere. Uninstall them.
(2) Try uninstalling/reinstalling the hardware. Boot into safe mode, go to
the Device Manager (eg, by right-clicking on My Computer),
and remove the PC card hardware. While you're there,
remove any entries you can find for (a) the CD-Rom, (b) any HD
devices/controllers except the ones necessary for your new drive.
Especially remove
duplicate entries. Don't worry about removing too much, anything essential
you take out will be restored on your next windows boot.
After you remove the entries, power down and power back up (i.e., very hard
boot) with the CD in place.
