Unfortunately, latest technology Lithium Ion does not behave like this. They
die completely - nothing.

There is a "best of both worlds" option if you have old batteries lying
around: use an old battery when plugged in to AC. If your old batteries
are like mine, they have a good 15 minutes of life in them. This should
give you more than enough time for a suspend, a hibernate, or a shutdown.
