I have been following the list for awhile, mostly just reading and learning.
I have developed a respect for the people who manage and contribute to this
list for the way they have shared their information, time and skills plus
the way they conduct themselves.

I believe this recent thread on the hard drive password issue has tarnished
this image somewhat.

I agree that theft is a problem. And I understand the reluctance to help
thieves. But people do make honest mistakes. And they come places like this
to get help. Treating people who come for help like thieves and idiots helps
no one.

In the original response, the first couple of paragraphs were excellent.
They explained what it was, and that it could not be removed. That answered
the question. His coverage of common excuses changed the tone of the message
though. A simple "It is the BEST security measure on the machine to protect
against data theft. It doesn't matter how the password got there, or how you
lost it, it cannot be removed." would have covered all the excuses he
listed.

And then the other responses requesting to put that stuff in your FAQ was
unbelievable. If you really want to put those types of things in, here are a
few more suggestions.

QUESTION: I am new and I want to know how to ...
RESPONSE: Before you make a request to the list, please be sure you have
searched through all the archives. Your question has probably been asked and
answered before.

QUESTION: Some of the files on my Win98 system got corrupted and it doesn't
run correctly. How can I repair them?
RESPONSE: You should have made a backup of your system just for these
instances. Live and Learn.

QUESTION: I bought my machine on ebay and no manuals came with it. I need to
"..."
RESPONSE: Tough. Hope you learned your lesson to do better research before
buying.

QUESTION: I am trying to find information about "..."
RESPONSE: Don't you know how to use Yahoo or Goggle?

Rob changed the tone of his message to "You are either a thief or an idiot.
Don't bother us." I don't think that is the message people intended, or that
I have come to expect from the people here.

If I am wrong and that is the intended message, I apologize for my
confusion. I must be one of the idiots.
