Hey Bruce,
I would NEVER buy anything for that kind of money on Ebay unless I knew the
seller personally or it was an IBM auction. Ebay only insures up to $200.
That is why there is a "caveat emptor" sign at the bottom of every page.
I feel bad for the people who get ripped but you are taking a BIG chance
every time you bid. If you keep that fact in perspective and treat the
auctions like a horse race you are sure to come out a winner most of the
time.
 I make it a point NEVER to pay with a money order or cashier's check. Use
an online payment service even if it costs a bit. Use a credit card so you
can notify them to dispute the charges if you don't receive what you bought
in a reasonable length of time..
That being said.....Ebay is a great place to get hard to find parts, used
thinkpads for your grandkids (& big kids :O), and that book you couldn't
find at the library!!
