Have you tried troubleshooting with the Driver Verifier (verifier.exe,
included in system32 folder of Win2000)? If this package of testing
tools works as MS says it does, I sure wish I had something like it
for Win98. Considering the point at which your problems start, the
"Pool being Freed" and "Driver Unload" checking look especially
tempting.
