Another option is to put whichever OS shortcuts are important
to YOU at the very top of the START menu and move out of the way
what M$ thinks is important (to make room). It's your computer,
not Bill's.

In addition to the Command Prompt (it's not DOS in any version
of NT or it's successors, W2K or XP), I put shortcuts to my two
favorite printers, Notepad and Character Map there. These I use
a lot and want them handy, rather than having to drill down though
layer after layer. Now they're only a click away.

Popular application shortcuts are in a custom toolbar at the bottom
of the screen. It's convenient to have your most-used stuff handy.
Took me a long time to figure all this out, and I'll probably change
it again next week, but it's better than it was.
