And this can vary from apartment to apartment.
I live on the 11th floor of a high-rise. When I moved in two years
ago, cablemodem (and Rogers digital cable) wasn't available, so I
went with 1meg ADSL from a local ISP (I was coming from Rogers
cablemodem in my house). Plugged it in and it ran no problem (my
main worry had been that although ADSL was _supposed_ to work at
this address, the wiring from the basement to the 11th floor might
put me over the distance limit).
But one of my neighbours on the 11th floor -- closer to the
elevators and presumably the main wiring -- has been unable to get
ADSL working. And another on the _4TH_ floor of this building has
the same problem. The latter person has some understanding of
computers, the former has none.
I suggested the 11th floor guy might have problems with the
apartment's internal wiring, but I didn't see anything obviously
wrong with his setup. And I was very surprised at the guy down on
4.
