Windows 98 had many problems with shutdowns, which were never really resolved in ME.
These have to do with things like timing issues, and there were a variety of fixes offered by
Microsoft, usually involving patches which inserted extra cycles into the shutdown process;
some of the fixes worked on some problems. I don't know if similar fixes/patches are available
for ME.
You can't extrapolate from one piece of cardbus hardware to another as to what the effect will be on this kind of
problem. My 560X never has shutdown problems with an external CD, but it sometimes hangs with a modem
card inserted instead.
Another common cause of shutdown problems is something screwy in the registry. Try running
scanreg /fix from a command prompt.
BTW, next time you are about to shutdown, take a look at what processes are running before you head to shutdown.
It is possible some other process only indirectly related to the CD is the real cause of the problem. Experiment with
killing these processes one-by-one before shutting down, to see if killing one will allow normal shutdown.
One more thing: sometimes the flashing-cursor screen will resolve itself if left for a very long time, and sometimes
you can 'wake up' the machine at a frozen shutdown by hitting the tab or the alt-S keys.
Good luck.
