Russ, been there, done that 5 or 6 times with my 380xd and 770X/Y TPs.
There is a microprocessor in the battery that counts the
recharge cycles.
When it thinks its counted enough, it sort of blows a
fuse in the battery.
Li-Ion batteries can turn into small fire bombs after
charge cycles well past this point.
After the "fuse blow" the battery charge led will flash and the whine
may/will start.
I don't think that you have any worries past the expensive battery.
BTW I gut out the old batteries and use the shell to plug the battery
hole and keep my good batteries in the refrigerator except when I
really need them.
