Subject: What low end ThinkPads work OK with Win 2000?

I seem to be collecting teacher type friends who are improvrished
and have old things like ThinkPads, castoffs given to them by others
who would like to use them in educational settings.

So far I have two folks using a little coral of Win95 ThinkPads and
they're doing OK.

The other day someone came to me with a request for help with
getting some ThinkPads running more modern software so she can
use them in her classroom.

Some of these units will run Linux and OpenBSD, as she wants to
expose the kids to non-Windows software to show them there is
more to life than MS (yeah!), but others need Windows for some of
the software she wants to run.

Given that Win95 can't legally be obtained any more (at least I
don't think it can be--if anyone has bright ideas on that please let
me know), I am looking towards Windows 2000 for several machines.

I actually kinda like Win2000. I think it will be MS's Magnum Opus.
My question is what are folks experience with running it on older lower
powered ThinkPads?

At this point I think my friend can get her hands on several different
kinds of ThinkPads. Knowing which ones would be better would be
a good thing.

Also, experience on running Linux on older models would be good too.
I don't have that much flight time with Linux.

I would expect the ram abilities of many of the units to be the biggest
problem, but perhaps I'm missing other things.

Any advice would be most welcome. Specific model data would be the
best to have, more general feelings second best but still appreciated!

Thanks, STeve Andre'
