Robert,
This is a common 770 problem. This guy can sell you a new inverter card
(resides in the lid, just below the LCD screen) for around $35 as I recall.
My new one works fine and is a different manufacturer to the original.
About 30 minutes to install but you need to be dextrous and read the IBM
hardware manual (on the IBM site).

Subject: ThinkPad 770ED: Screen goes dark at random times
My ThinkPad 770ED, running Windows 95, developed a disturbing symptom
a couple of days ago. At random times, the LCD display suddenly goes
dark -- not completely blank, but so dark that I can barely see a
faint image of the windows of programs that are running. The
remaining functionality of the ThinkPad is not affected.
If I reboot, the display is perfect again, for a period of time.
The problem may occur mostly early in the day -- I'm not sure of this
yet.
Since this problem began, I have connected an external monitor to the
ThinkPad. The display on the external monitor is not affected when
the ThinkPad's LCD display goes dark.
Furthermore, if, after the LCD display goes dark, I toggle to the
external monitor and then back to the LCD display, the LCD display
again functions perfectly.
The ThinkPad was purchased new in December 1998.
Any advice concerning this problem would be most appreciated.
Robert Lawrence
