So, on the auto trip we just returned from, we had our TP 385D running
DeLorme's Street Atlas with the GPS receiver, as we often do, when the
program complained that the runtime CD was not in the drive. Of course, it
was, as it had been for the previous several hours (in fact, days). Still,
try as I might, I couldn't get the program to recognize the CD or read it.

I tried other programs as well, and none of them could get a rise out of
the CD drive. Oh Woe! A drive gone bad! -- and this just after I had
upgraded to a larger hard drive to extend the useful life of the ancient
machine!

So for the rest of the trip, we used the Street Atlas program without the
CD (actually, not quite as bad as one might expect, as long as you have
paper maps as well -- but still no where near as useful). And we returned
determined to ask you folks what to do about a 385D with a non-functioning
CD drive.

However, just now, when I fired up the TP again here on my desk, the drive
(of course) works fine.

So, now what ? Does anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong ? I
did try starting the programs several times ... over several days. I did
try rebooting the computer several times. (I normally don't boot this
computer very often -- just hibernate. On trips, I let Street Atlas keep
running and just stop tracking and hibernate whenever we stop for an
extended period, like for a meal or over night.)

Is the drive actually going bad, or is something else involved ? Should I
be thinking about replacing the drive ? Is it possible ? When this
happens again (It's sure to, isn't it ?), is there anything can I do to
recover ?

Oh, the operating system is the Windows 95 that came with it ... probably
not ever upgraded, but I can't recall. (Hey, if it works ...)

I look forward to hearing any suggestions.

Thanks

Stratton
