You can certainly have both the TrackPoint and an external pointing device
working simultaneously and reliably in XP or any other recent version of
Windows. I do it all the time. (I use the TrackPoint for just about
everything myself, but I keep a USB mini-mouse in my computer bag so that
when someone starts poking their finger at my screen, I can plug in the
mouse and say, "Here, point with this.")

All you have to do to make this work is change the TrackPoint setting in the
BIOS setup, or with a PS2 TPOINT ENABLE command, or probably in the ThinkPad
configuration utility (which I don't seem to have working at the moment).

I've never used a Logitech mouse or their driver, though, only the standard
XP driver for the external mouse.

For Gordon's problem, rolling back the mouse driver to the standard XP one
sounds like a good thing to try.
