My 32Mb arrived today by mail from my friends in Long Beach. Stuck
it in the camera, up pops "253". Then I changed the quality to
"Best" and it says "112". Still fine with me, compared to the
25-40 I've been getting with the 4Mb. (I bought it for eBay
pictures, and the 1152x resolution is good enough, and with maximum
compression I was getting from 25 to 40).
I realize the 32Mb will become a frustration soon, but I bet 128 or
256 will go down by more than the U$20 I just paid. :) That, and
of course if I upgrade the camera it might not like whatever CF
memory I buy now.

Okay thanks, I'll look into a cheap PCMCIA adapter for my TP. I
think I've seen a PCMCIA slot that can be mounted in a 3.5" drive
bay, that's what I thought would speed things up on the desktop.
But if I can just avoid carrying the USB-based adapter with my TP,
I'll be happy. :)

I get nervous with on-camera deletion because I was trying to take
a picture of myself outside Duff's Wings in Buffalo, but it wasn't
turning out. In deleting the failed pictures, I also managed to
delete the perfect picture of my plateful of wings. :(
Thanks again to everyone who helped me with this!
