I knew the number of exposures was variable, see my eBay-pictures
comment below. I'm not certain I'll always get more pictures by
cropping out the background (although it will definitely be
sharper, since it's an optical zoom). I think it depends, if the
background is more complex than the subject then yes, but if the
subject is more complex than the background it might actually
decrease the number of pictures (but still with sharper image after
cropping. For instance, if I took all the eBay pictures at widest
angle (most of the blue background), I'd expect to get more images
than if I cropped right to the edges of the subject?

If it offered a straight TIF version, it would be possible to
calculate, but of course it doesn't. :(

My eBay stuff is almost all taken against a blue sheet for a
backdrop. With my 4Mb card and maximim compression, the camera
suggests 27 images or something like that, but I consistently got
40 eBay shots (sometimes the counter would go down one when I took
a shot, sometimes it stayed the same, so I must have been using
only 0.7 of the expected memory consumption per picture. Never
tried a pure blue background.
