Thanks for the suggestions. AFAIK swapping either of the two RAM modules out doesn't alleviate the problem - it still freezes. I ran memtest with free RAM [as indicated by 'free -m'] as a parameter and got 'no errors found'. At present I'm trying to get pc dr from the IBM site and keep the darn thing up long enough to run it.
Any other ideas before I call IBM and fess up to having a thinkpad without Windoze on it?
