A factor that is easily overlooked is that this is a two-stage
process. Once you run the .exe program, you have not set up
the modem. You then have to go into the directory where the
files were deposited and run a setup.
As is all too frequently the case, IBM's docs and installation
package aren't clear on that point.
A few months ago I upgraded the modem on my 600E. I think it
was a three-step process because I had to uninstall the
previous drivers first. The process took a long time (over
half an hour), there was no improvement in performance (I get
occasional retraining--1 to 3 minutes long--at the beginning of
online sessions with the local ISP. The ISP said it was likely
that the firmware on my modem wasn't up to date.), and after
installing, a piece of software "Chess Assistant 4" failed to
work. It is a software whose copy protection schema looks at
the hardware, and I guess thought that I had "migrated" the
application to a new machine because the modem drivers make
changes to parts of the system that appear as hardware.
Whatever the reason, neither reinstalling nor Chess Assistant
tech support was able to help. An it's software that I use
regularly in my work, which is chess journalism.
So yes yes, always get the latest drivers ... but if it works,
don't fix it !
