I've done this on two 760XLs with great success.
There are power buss points ( + and Ground ) close to the plug pins.
I just solder #22 plated wire from the pins to these points.
It's best to do both, after all of the work to get to the bottom of the board
it would be nasty, nasty, nasty to go though it again if the good? one opened
up later.
You can find the right buss points by getting the pinout for the dock connector
from the IBM hardware manual and ringing out the point near the plug pins.
