the 600E will support two 256meg parts..
the BIOS needs to be up to date..
IBM's max RAM was when there were not 256meg parts available..

  Subject: 2x256MB 144-pin SODIMM in 600E 2645-4BU?

  Hi List,

I am new to the list. I have a 600E and its great.

I saw this message (below) recently on the list. It made me think. IBM says the MAX RAM for a 600E is "288MB". Is is true that I can put 2 256MB 144-pin SODIMM sticks in my 600E (2645-4BU)?

  Thanks,

  Kris

Compare the entries for the 390E and 770Z. You will see that they not only
take the same memory, but they have the same Intel 440BX chipset. As far as
memory is concerned, they are exactly the same machine!

An interesting experiment would be to see if the 390E can take 256MB sticks like
it's 390X big brother!

This would be akin to the use of 256MB sticks speced for the 600X or early Ts in
our 600Es, something most of us are already familiar with and another set of
machines built on the 440BX chipset. The fact that there's no onboard memory on
the 390s to conflict with added memory is a plus.

Were I you Bert, I'd give it a try. Get some 256MB Crucial sticks for the 390X
(use coupon code GENMBPJN30 for $30 off!) and let us know the results.

Regards,

James
