Congratulations on your new 600X, I hope it serves you as faithfully as mine
have.
If the modem connector port is blanked off, I would wager that there's no
internal modem in your machine. First thing to do is see if you indeed have the
mini-PCI modem card installed. Turn it over and open the cover over the modem.

If the mini-PCI slot is vacant, you would need to purchase and install the
08K3429 mini-PCI modem ($81.50 from IBM) as well as the 27L0501 modem cable
($11.50 from IBM), which has the RJ-11 connector missing from where your port is
blanked off.
For the $93.00 that IBM wants for the parts (plus shipping, plus tax) you could
get several very good PCMCIA modems with dongles that wouldn't block the antenna
on your wireless NIC.
Personally, I'd get the parts from IBM and keep that second PCMCIA port free for
other uses.
