Ah, indeed, I took a look at the IDE socket in my 600 and there was one
wire that had been shoved backwards out of the plastic grid that makes up
the socket. After some work with tweezers, I was able to get it back into
it's proper place in the socket. And that fixed the problem!
  If it doesn't stay, I'll try putting a drop of epoxy or similar on the
spot to hold it in place.
