Hi everyone,

A year ago I bought a second hand 560. The cd didn't
work, but I laplinked anything I needed from my main
pc.

Recently it started booting up into what appears to be
suspend or hibernation mode. I power on, all boot
lights are normal for a second then only 2 lights
remain lit (the ones at opposite ends of the row of
lights). I can hit Fn-F4, Fn-F12, both beep and
that's about it (ditto Fn-F2, Fn-F3, Fn-F7, Fn-F11,
etc). The boot doesn't make it to RAM count. Nothing
is displayed on the screen.

I took the laptop to a tech and he quoted me $3300*
for a new mainboard. The tp was bought for $400**...
reckon I might try here first...

The following has been tried without success:
- recharging the battery and using mains power.
- replace the CMOS battery. (Incidentally I tried to
boot without the cmos batt. and there was no change to
the boot).
- attempting boot with ext. floppy attached.

Other salient info:
- A month earlier I was having power problems and
pulled the back and keyboard off. In the process the
boot button popped off and was reinserted. Could the
metal clip on the button screw up if it does or
doesn't
contact with the case?

- IE4's installed. I read online somewhere site that
IE4 has "compatibility issues" with the 560. Maybe an
issue, maybe not.

Specs: Win95, IE4, 24Mb, 1Gb, P133

*a note on some techies:
I once did tech support with a guy who recommended to
half his clients that they reformat and reinstall as
the solution to their problems. This works, but there
are usually easier ways... the techie I talked to
could well be in this category.

**NB: that's $.au about 1/2 $us

Kudos,
Michael
