Our experience with IBM adapters here and with the Government is that
the IBM adapters are among the least problematic... We see considerably
more failures in Compaq and Toshiba laptops... in fact, out of 6000
Thinkpads I placed with the Government from 1996 until now, we had only
one fail... on a Thinkpad 760...

Compaq, Dell, Toshiba and Winbook have had adapter recalls. I do not
remember a Thinkpad power adapter recall.

However, any power adapter that makes a noise... any noise... is a
serious problem that should be dealt with through IBM because there is a
possible user risk they need to know about. Maybe a recall is needed.

Like blind men building a mechanical elephant, each of the players picked up a hammer and wrench and, working separately and often secretly, fashioned gears, soldered wires, and pounded sheet metal. One built a leg, another the tail, the third a trunk. Then suddenly this creation, like a dreadful android, sprung to life, catching its builders in its gears as it lurched, uncontrolled, toward unknown destinations, without purpose, limit, or remorse.
