Hello Jeff

The last thing I would try before saying go out a buy a pcmcia modem and try
that is:

Go to start, programs, accessories, communications and then HyperTerminal.

It will ask you to enter a name and choose an icon. You can enter any name
you like and then press OK

Do not enter a phone number go to the "connect using" box and choose com3.
This will grey out the phone number field.

By connecting to the com port instead of the modem you will by pass the
drivers that windows uses and so can eliminate a problem if it is with
windows. You will talk directly with the com port and what ever is connected
to it. So it means that you will talk directly to the modem it self with no
programs in between.

Press OK

Then take the bits per second field to 9600 then you know there will be no
problems with the speed of the port. Press OK

You should then have a flashing curser in the top left hand corner.

If you get a message that the port cannot be opened then restart the
computer and go through the Hyper Terminal set-up again.

Once t you get the flashing curser

Type at and press enter

It should respond with OK

If it does not then your modem is not responding and it is either not
working properly or is not on com3.

If you get the response OK

Type atz and press enter. This will reset the modems memory and you should
get the response OK

Then type at&f1 and press enter. You should get the response OK if you get
error then type at&f and press enter.

Then type atx3&w and press enter. This will save the setting to ignore dial
tone to memory.

Then type atdt and put the phone number for AOL after the atdt with a space
in between. Your modem should dial out and connect to AOL.

If it does not connect replace the number for AOL with a mobile number or
another phone number that you will be able to hear ring.

If your modem will not connect to any of the numbers try a PCMCIA modem.

Mark Lee

Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my query.

I added atx3 to the init string in the Modem properties (I'm using
Windows 2000, BTW). I'm getting the same message in AOL, that is, "the
modem reports that there is no dial tone".

I do get a difference in Start|Programs|Accessories|Internet Connection
Wizard (which I have also used, knowing that there will be a prompt to
dial out, in order to get a list of ISP phone numbers). Previously, I
got a "no dial tone" message - now I get a "unable to connect" message.
I assume this is because now that I have told the modem not to worry
about dial tone, it waits to give an error message until it can't make
the connection.

What I don't understand is that when I query the modem in the
diagnostics part of the Properties, it looks to be OK.

In any event, thank you very much for your help, and perhaps someone
will chime in here.

I honestly wonder if it would be cheaper just to buy a PCMCIA modem,
instead of sending it out to get it fixed. I don't know.
