...and it's in there! I located the SD-R2002 on eBay for $150,
which is pretty much the going rate. It swaps into the caddy for the
original CD-ROM drive perfectly, however the tabs for the face-plate
do not line up with the indentations in the front of the drive. (NOTE:
The plate for the original DVD-ROM fit perfectly, I just chose not to
butcher mine). I sawed the tabs off with a utility knife and glued the
face-plate onto the drive. The fit and finish is perfect and looks
stock.
The performance of the drive has been excellent so far. Windows
2000 configured it automatically. It recognizes CD, CD-Rs I'd burned
previously with my firewire Sony drive, and plays DVDs successfully
(even the troublesome "Matrix" disc). I haven't installed CD-burner
software yet, so haven't tried that feature out - give me another day.
I also need to find a region hack, but I'm sure there's one out there.
Entire process took about 45 minutes and a root beer. All in all a
nifty little upgrade, the cost of which will be partially offset
(about 50%) by selling the now-obsolete DVD drive. Not bad for a
3-year old machine.
