I'm sharing this in the hope that it'll help someone who was in my position and
stumped about this.

Awhile back I purchased a 128 MB PC100 SODIMM for my TP600 2645-51U
to add to the 64 MB that it already contained (32 onboard, 32 in PC66
SODIMM). Since the available slot was the one closest to the front of the
Thinkpad, I installed it there. Once I booted up, a curious thing happened: Both
the POST and Win98 told me I only had 128 Megs. After reading a few
archived list messages on the subject, I came to the tentative conclusion that it
couldn't use both the PC66 and PC100 at the same time. So I decided to pull
out the non-soldered 32 MB SODIMM so that I could at least give it to someone
else who could use it. But when I did, the POST memory count dropped to 96
MB. When i reinserted it, it returned to 128. I wanted to experiment a little more
to see what was going on, but I became busy and couldn't. Today I went back
to it, determined to find out what the hell the problem was.

I pulled out the 32MB part and sure enough, it POSTed at 96. I pulled out the
128 MB part and it POSTed at 64 with the other one in. So I tried moving the
128 to the slot closest the rear of the TP. It then POSTed at 160, which was
what it should with the onboard 32, but locked up instantly. Then I put the other
32 meg part into the front slot, and it booted perfectly at 192 megs, confirmed
by Win98. I'm clueless to explain it, but it works like a charm.
