Thanks Rob for the suggestion but as soon as I plugged in the mouse the
trackpoint went dead and stayed dead even when I removed the mouse.

If it works like my A21p, you could try plugging in the mouse after the
system boots up. When I boot with mouse attached, the mouse is the only
active device. When I boot up and then attach the mouse, both mouse and
trackpoint work.

This may not be the exact type of answer you were looking for, but
hopefully it helps.
