600E no response

My 600E has run well for three years, but now needs repairs.

Symptoms: after switching on, 130xxx kb OK and thinkpad logo, and then no display at all. I can hear an odd noise right after the thinkpad logo.

Diagnosis : to change the mother board (cost about $100 or so).

Is it a correct diagnosis? do I have to spend so much on this? Any other way? Thanks in advance.
