You can't boot a 701 through a PCMCIA device. That would
require a BIOS re-write, and we don't have the Source Code.
You may be able to boot a 701 through a CompactFlash device
mounted in a carrier mounted in the hard drive caddy mounted in
the hard drive bay. However, my initial attempts at doing this
with the VME carrier have FAILED. I have a few ideas from the
manufacturer, but no clear reason why it wouldn't work.

I don't think there is such a thing. It's easy to find 701
drives with cables, and it is also easy to find a 701 printer
cable (e.g., on ebay). But a single cable that does both, no.
Even if you could wire one yourself, I'd question whether it
would be safe. But I am not an electrical engineer (nor even
close to one!).

I don't believe you need to do anything special with any HD of
6.4 GB or smaller.

No, the 701 is reasonably fast for a 486/75.
If you are using Win98, I'd ask whether it is the OS which is
slow and thrashy. You should strongly consider 98lite (do a
google search to find the website), which makes the OS run more
efficiently.
Even more important is the amount of RAM. Did you say how much
you have? Win95 will run OK in 16 MB, but 40 MB is better.
For Win98 I'd think that 24 MB would be about minimum, with 40
MB (the maximum, unfortunately) being better.

Nope

I would not put that high on my list.

I'd follow other suggestions first.

And it generally does in the 701
