Hello,
I wonder if the built-in volume is muted. With the system booted up
press the function key (Fn) and hold it down. Repeatly press the
Page Up key (PgUp) several times. See if you can hear a beep when
you press the Page Up key. This volume control is separate from
the windows one.

I used the full retail version of 98SE and an MSDN of
ME. I strongly suspect it's not a driver issue, since
all OSes in question detect the sound hardware, report
no conflict, and pretend as if they're playing audio
just fine -- it's just that nothing comes out the speakers.
The DOS-mode PS2 utility is the command-line equivalent
to the IBM Configuration Utility for Windows. For those
who don't want to use Windows and still be able to configure
the IRQs and what not, this is the way to go, albeit
while fiddling with 2-3 floppies; to that end I made a
bootable ISO image with some DOS-mode disk utilities as
well as the PS2 config stuff all on one CD:

The disk utils show up on A: and the ps2 utils show up
on drive L:. I'm fairly certain that the PS2 util isn't
specific to the TP600 but works on quite a range of
Thinkpads.
