Hi,
My name is Teresa and I have 3 thinkpads sitting in office, I just bought
them, long story, hubby has another in truck, they are all 760EL except one
760C.
Being of feeble mind but determined I resurrected a bunch of HD I got with
two of these computers. They are running 98 and 95 and one has a semi
version of
Linux on it, that was "fun!!!". I'm taking it off and putting Knoppix on I
think but that isn't question.
The 760C has always been the problem, I thought the screen was shot, hooked
it up to an external monitor, no dice, so bad computer, start stealing
parts?? I happened to read somewhere (remember I am new to thinkpads) to
hit the fn and f7 and display would come on. Sure enough it did!! Shows
error 163, wants clock set sometimes from either 2007 or 1997?? I set clock
and it goes off. Once I got into testing and HD tested OK and system board,
it took a long long time to test memory and then it shut down.
Am I missing something obvious here?? Is it cmos, something loose, memory,
or a nasty evil tempered computer that only comes on when I am about to rip
it's guts out???
BTW I did discover it is possible to install linux with a boot floppy and cd
hot swapping them, you just have to be quick and when it's trying to mount
cd to find installation files you push cd in and it says wah lah. Only
problem is fips took away d drive designation in windows somehow for cd so I
can only run in dos or linux?? I guess I'll have to reinstall drivers for
cd or is ther something simple to do?? I know NOTHING about linux either
except I'm not happy with Bill Gates.
Thanks,
Teresa
