I had one that behaved like that, and it needed a new system board.
Make sure it is not greyed out in EZSETUP. (The CD)
Check for master/slave jumpers on the hard drive.
Run the Drive Fitness Test and see if it detects the IDDE CD-ROM drive. If
not, it is likely a hardware problem.
