Which video card does this have? Some of the 1400 series had ATi, in which case you should replace the mediamatics DVD software with something based on the Cinemaster engine (such as ATI player). (If a Neomagic chip, then I think PowerDVD might be better.)

By "IBM's drivers" do you mean the latest drivers? If not, upgrade. Also, make sure you have the latest version of DirextX.
On an LCD display, the software won;t run at a higher color resolution than the screen is set for.

Sure - run the player as a 'solo' app. This means running it using a utility like WinSolo (http://www.sonicspot.com/winsolo/winsolo.html).
