I use a Matrox card, specifically the RT2000 which is now 2 years old.
I just attended the Matrox European road show and saw the RX10 and
RX100. If you friend wants just to digitize and have a few effects the
RX10 is for him. If he's ambitious and wants to play with
near-professional level transitions in real time, the RX100, around
$1100, would be for him.
But make sure he's got a late-model machine with lots of memory!
