[Thinkpad] [TP 600X] Screen blank or dim at startup or after standby

ThinkPad 600X: This unit normally works perfectly, but sometimes, when
it starts up, or when it emerges from standby, the screen is blank or
extremely dark. I can almost always fix it by closing and opening the
lid once (sometimes twice). What causes this? And the screen going to
fail on me completely when I'm somewhere where I can't get a
replacement?
