It's an APM/ACPI conflict and there's no certain way to resolve it short of
re-loading the OS. This issue drove me buggy a while back on my old 600E.
You can try turning off APM in the system's BIOS, but that can lead to other
woes.
Simply reaching up and depressing the lid switch momentarily will usually
"awaken" the display.
