You need to be more specific...
are you sure it is a back light failure, as opposed to screen blanking
Install the DOS ThinkPad Utils and from the C:\ prompt type:
ps2 PRESENTATION ENABLE
Then press enter
This will turn off BIOS screen blanking
There is NO other way to turn it off on the more modern ThinkPad Utils
