Since you didn't mention... Does this happen if Windows is not running? If
it's quiet before Windows starts, what happens if you listen on headphones
while Windows boots--when does it start happening? Before the Welcome
screen? After you log in?

I'm not too keen on that idea of using the Win2000 sound driver, but you
could use driver rollback or system restore after the experiment, so I guess
it's not likely to hurt much.

One thing about the Microsoft updates: IBM's advice is to use Microsoft's
software updates for everything but drivers, and get them from IBM's site
instead. If you've installed an updated Microsoft sound driver, you might
try rolling it back and getting an IBM driver (if there is one) instead.
