Michael,

That's an excellent question, so I tried it - it starts at the Windows
login screen just about the time the HD activity comes to a stop, and
waiting for me to login.

I haven't had a chance to try the W2K driver yet. As far as I can find on
the IBM site, there is no XP driver audio available. At least I couldn't
find one.
