People who travelled without battery or DVD player (presumably
in the bay) got hassled. I don't know if these parts were
visibly absent (like a gaping hole in the computer), but
perhaps that is the answer.
I travelled from Canada to Mexico in December. In Canada they
were extremely interested in computers; had to turn on every
time, explosive swabs etc. In US (LAX and SFO) they seemed
more interested in other things. On the way back they were
very interested in a stack of dinner plates that my wife was
carrying. In Mexico, the inspection (aside from the obligatory
x-ray scan) of carry-on luggage was perfunctory. HOWEVER, they
carefully (and politely and efficiently) inspected all checked
luggage which Canada and US didn't bother with at all.
My wife had trouble everywhere because her boots (like cowboy
boots) had metal inserts and set off the alarms. Next time ...
sneakers!
At the moment, you see a lot of breathing masks at YVR and
Toronto Airport because of SARS, which to me appears a more
potent argument against travel than terrorism is.
