That's the problem. The new drive is being seen as a SLAVE when it's in the
machine as the MASTER. The standard for this setting wasn't established until
after your original drive was built and the new drive is exactly the opposite.

You need a "new" style drive caddy: http://www.thinkpads.com/prod04.htm or you
need to do some selective surgery on the existing caddy to cut the drive select
wires.
